This work was commissioned for the Charivari exhibition. The exhibition focuses on Charivari, Katzenmusik, Cacerolazo, and similar terms that refer to public rituals of noise-making with pots and pans, historically used for social disapproval, which have evolved into global, non-violent forms of political protest.

Nowadays one of the most common materials found in pots and pans is aluminum.  Alles in Ordnung  is an interactive artwork that deconstruct this material to question the political weight that individuals have within a space. Reflecting on the agency and socio-political impact of individuals, the piece  resemble a welcome doormat. Each time a visitor steps on, the altered sound of the aluminum shavings, inspired by the sonic characteristics of a cacerolazo, echoes through the gallery. However, this sonic reaction is randomly delayed, creating tension and confusion as visitors anticipate when their actions will trigger a reaction in the space. 

As in pots and pans protests, destruction and sacrifice are essential components in the process of modifying the current state of affairs. Guests gradually erase the message painted on top of the aluminum, transforming passive observation into active participation.

„ATEMRAUM“ – Ausstellungs- und Lehrprojekt zum Verhältnis von Atem, Medialität und Wahrnehmung in den Künsten und kuratorischer Vermittlung

Im Sommersemester 2024 hat sich ein kuratorisches Lehr- und Ausstellungsprojekt an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU) mit dem Thema „Atem / Raum“ beschäftigt. Dabei stand der Begriff des Atemraums im Mittelpunkt, geprägt vom Schweizer Kurator Harald Szeemann als Metapher für seine Ausstellungspraxis in den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren: Ein Kunstwerk hat Szeemann zufolge dann genügend Atemraum, wenn die Kuratorin bzw. der Kurator in einer Ausstellung das werkspezifisch angemessene Verhältnis zum Raum, zu anderen Exponaten und zu den Besucherinnen und Besuchern findet. Entsprechend ging es im interdisziplinären Projektseminar an der JGU um die Frage, wie Atem als ökologische Kategorie in den verschiedenen Künsten thematisiert und wie „Atemräume“ als Zwischenräume und Orte ästhetischer Aushandlungsprozesse in einer Ausstellung oder performativen Präsentation geschaffen werden können. Als innovatives Lehrprojekt vom Gutenberg Lehrkolleg (GLK) gefördert, haben Studierende der Kunstgeschichte, der Bildenden Kunst, der Musik und der Musikwissenschaft in den vergangenen Wochen gemeinsam mit Künstler*innen an verschiedenen Projekten und deren Präsentation gearbeitet, die vom 26. Juni bis 3. Juli 2024 in der Schule des Sehens auf dem Gutenberg-Campus zu sehen sind.

Concertperformance Do. 13.06.24 in VIERTE WELT, Berlin

Codes of Absence takes us with musician Nico Yurgaki* to trace, throughout musical improvisations, his experiences of loneliness during the migration from Colombia into the EU, and how it affected his relationship with his mother Bertha Quintero. Quintero is a conga player and one of the founders of the first female salsa orchestra in Colombia, Caña Brava.

In a live video call, Yurgaki will be on stage at the Vierte Welt and Quintero in Bogotà. Together they will take us on a journey along the concept of the five claves (rhythmic codes) of Colombian-Pacific and Caribbean music. These five codes are rhythmic patterns that appear in many Colombian musical pieces. As the result of the centuries-long interweaving of different musical cultures in the Latin- Afro-American, and Caribbean regions, they will use them to guide us through intimate conversations discussing themes such as motherhood, rebellion against the patriarchy, masculinity, love – and the feeling of the absence of the loved ones in a seemingly globally connected world. Hence it turns these patterns into a symbol for the transition of identity- and its transgression.

*Nico Yurgaki is the stage name of Nicolas Cristancho, masterstudent sound art - composition in Mainz.

Charivari, cat music, cacerolazo, pots-and-pans protest, rough music, shalwari banging... all these terms describe similar rituals in which noise is made in public as a gesture of protest and disapproval. Until the 19th century, these rituals were still primarily linked to moral concepts, but became increasingly politicised. Since the 20th century, acoustic protest has been used as an explicitly political form of expression all over the world, including in France, Canada, Sudan, Morocco, Myanmar, Nigeria, Chile, Colombia and Iceland. The banging and banging of pots and pans thus possesses the qualities of a decentralised, non-violent language of protest that is almost universally understandable. The group exhibition Charivari presents three individual artistic explorations of the theme. The exploration takes place via video, sound and objects. Colombian-born artist Juan David Bermúdez, for example, uses interactive sound installations to realise his experiences of the cacerolazo in his home country.
In contrast, there are films by Zaki Al-Maboren that document the acoustic protest in Sudan from 2019, which appear in a completely new light in light of current developments there. It is a similar story with Tan Bones, whose work "Sound Pot" combines objects from the protest movement in Myanmar in 2021 with an interactive smartphone app.
However, Charivari does not simply present political activism, but also questions the extent to which acoustic protest is the starting point for an aesthetic experience. The works do not directly accuse anyone, but invite viewers to question their own role and the boundary between creative protest and violence. The tumult of the Charivari thus reveals both hope and despair.

As Europe's largest meet-up of university studios for electronic music, »next_generation« offers up-and-coming composers a platform to present their new musical developments. This year, the festival initiated and conceived by Ludger Brümmer is celebrating its 10th edition.

Over four days, »next_generation« offers an exciting and dense program with the latest positions from the fields of »fixed media«, »spatial music« and »live electronics«. The festival thus guarantees a representative overview of the current creative work of the next generation of composers in the context of technology and art.

This year, students from 27 electronic university studios from Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland are taking part. All participants will have the opportunity to present their work in concerts and installations at various locations in the ZKM or to exchange ideas about their own areas of interest in lectures and discussions. In addition, professors and lecturers will report on current developments in the individual studios and departments.

The PAiR residency is a space for inventive encounters, where artists, researchers and curators can develop their projects in a stimulating, distraction-free environment of interdisciplinary dialogue.

A point of intersection between humans and nature, the local and the global, cutting-edge practices and age-old traditions, PAiR is a place where new meanings emerge via creative experiments and interdisciplinary knowledge-sharing.

BIO
Taegyu Lim majored in Music Technology and Computer Science in University. He also making and releasing music after graduation.
Lim worked as a composer, mix engineer. In 2020, he released his own album. In 2022, he also published a thesis on the impact of short-form videos on humans. Taegyu Lim’s art and research typically explores the interplay between nature, space, and their relationships between humans. And primarily grounded in ecological(especially sound ecological) and philosophical perspectives, although at times, it also incorporates scientific elements.
And the result manifests itself in converging compositions, artistic installations, performances or media artworks.

This research goes beyond simply dealing with sound; it will serve as a substantial foundation for transitioning from being a musician to engaging in the broader realm of artistic endeavors, building a complex artistic experience and career.
